Navigating the Globe: Understanding US State Department Travel Advisories

Here at Come Monday Travel, we believe that informed travelers are empowered travelers. As you plan your next adventure abroad, one of the most crucial resources to consult is the U.S. Department of State's Travel Advisory system. These advisories provide valuable insights into the safety and security conditions of destinations around the world, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans. Let's break down the different advisory levels and what they mean for you.

The U.S. Department of State employs a four-tiered system to communicate travel risks to American citizens:

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (Blue)

This is the lowest advisory level, indicating that while a destination is generally safe, there are still some risks to be aware of. Just like in your daily life at home, it's essential to remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions.

  • Examples of why a Level 1 advisory might be issued:
    • General petty crime, such as pickpocketing or bag snatching, particularly in tourist areas or on public transportation. For instance, Barcelona, Spain, while a vibrant and popular destination, often has warnings about pickpockets in crowded areas like Las Ramblas.
    • Isolated incidents of civil unrest or political demonstrations that are not widespread or specifically targeting tourists.
    • Low-level health concerns that are typical for the region.

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (Yellow)

This level suggests that there are heightened risks in certain areas or situations within the destination. It advises travelers to be more aware of their surroundings and take extra precautions.

  • Examples of why a Level 2 advisory might be issued:
    • Specific areas within a country experiencing higher rates of crime or gang violence. For example, certain neighborhoods in large cities in Latin America might carry this advisory.
    • The potential for terrorist attacks in specific locations or against certain targets.
    • Outbreaks of infectious diseases that require specific preventative measures.
    • Periods of political instability or potential for protests that could disrupt travel. For instance, during times of significant political change in a country, a Level 2 advisory might be issued due to the potential for unpredictable events.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel (Orange)

This serious advisory level indicates significant risks to safety and security. The State Department urges citizens to carefully consider whether non-essential travel to the destination is necessary.

  • Examples of why a Level 3 advisory might be issued:
    • High levels of violent crime, such as kidnapping, armed robbery, or murder.
    • Ongoing political instability, civil unrest, or armed conflict. For example, a country experiencing a civil war would likely have a Level 3 or even Level 4 advisory.
    • A high risk of terrorist attacks that are likely and indiscriminate.
    • Widespread health emergencies or natural disasters where infrastructure and medical services are severely impacted.

Level 4: Do Not Travel (Red)

This is the highest advisory level, reserved for the most dangerous destinations. The State Department strongly advises U.S. citizens not to travel to these countries or specific regions within a country due to extreme safety and security risks.

  • Examples of why a Level 4 advisory might be issued:
    • Active war zones or areas with ongoing intense conflict.
    • Extremely high risk of terrorism, kidnapping, or hostage-taking.
    • Widespread lawlessness or a complete breakdown of civil order.
    • Severe health crises where medical care is unavailable. For example, a country experiencing a complete collapse of its healthcare system during a pandemic might warrant a Level 4 advisory.

Beyond the Levels: General Travel Safety Awareness

Regardless of the Travel Advisory level of your destination, it's always wise to practice general travel safety awareness. Here are some essential tips for American citizens traveling abroad:

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP): This free service allows the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your destination to contact you in case of an emergency, such as a natural disaster, 1 civil unrest, or family crisis. It also helps them keep you informed about important safety and security updates. You can easily enroll online before your trip.
  • Stay Informed: Before and during your trip, regularly check the U.S. Department of State's website for the latest Travel Advisories, alerts, and country-specific information. Pay attention to local news and be aware of current events.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas. Be cautious in crowded places and be aware of who is around you. Keep your valuables secure and out of sight.
  • Protect Your Belongings: Use hotel safes for valuable items, and keep copies of important documents (passport, visa, flight tickets) separate from the originals. Consider leaving expensive jewelry at home.
  • Be Cautious with Alcohol and Social Situations: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, which can impair your judgment. Be wary of overly friendly strangers and avoid going to unfamiliar or isolated places with people you don't know.
  • Learn Local Laws and Customs: Respect local laws and customs, even if they differ from those in the United States. Dress modestly in religious areas and be mindful of local sensitivities.
  • Make Contingency Plans: Have a plan in case of an emergency, including how you will communicate, where you will go, and who you will contact. Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member back home.
  • Health Precautions: Consult your doctor about necessary vaccinations and health precautions for your destination. Pack a basic first-aid kit and any necessary medications. Ensure you have adequate travel health insurance.

Traveling abroad can be an enriching and unforgettable experience. By understanding the U.S. Department of State's Travel Advisory system and practicing smart travel safety, you can minimize risks and enjoy your journey with greater peace of mind. At Come Monday Travel, we're here to help you navigate the world safely and confidently. Happy travels!

Unlock a World of Accessible Adventures: Your Guide to Finding Shore Excursions for Everyone

The anticipation of arriving in a new port is one of the most exciting parts of a cruise vacation. Exploring different cultures, historical sites, and natural wonders firsthand creates lasting memories. However, for travelers with accessibility needs, the prospect of shore excursions can sometimes feel daunting. Will there be suitable transportation? Are the attractions truly accessible?

Fear not, fellow adventurers! With careful planning and the right resources, the world of shore excursions can be open and enjoyable for everyone. This guide will equip you with the knowledge and strategies to find accessible adventures in every port of call.

The Importance of Proactive Research

Finding accessible shore excursions isn't always as straightforward as browsing standard tour offerings. It requires a bit more digging and direct communication. Start your research well in advance of your cruise to allow ample time for inquiries and bookings.

Key Questions to Ask Tour Operators

When you identify a shore excursion that interests you, don't hesitate to reach out to the tour operator directly. Here are crucial questions to ask:

  • Mobility Device Compatibility:
    • "Is this tour wheelchair accessible?" (Be specific about the type and size of your wheelchair or mobility scooter.)
    • "Are there any steps or stairs involved in the tour route or at the attractions?" If so, inquire about alternative accessible routes.
    • "What type of ground surface will we encounter (e.g., uneven cobblestones, sand, paved paths)?"
    • "If transportation is included, is the vehicle equipped with a ramp or lift? What are the dimensions and weight capacity of the ramp/lift?"
    • "Are there securement devices in the vehicle for wheelchairs or scooters?"
  • Pace and Duration:
    • "What is the overall pace of the tour? Will there be opportunities to rest?"
    • "What is the total duration of the excursion, including travel time?" Ensure it aligns with your stamina and needs.
  • Accessibility at Attractions:
    • "Are the attractions we will visit wheelchair accessible? Are there accessible restrooms available?"
    • "Are there audio guides or visual aids available for individuals with hearing or visual impairments?"
    • "Are service animals permitted at the attractions?"
  • Assistance Provided:
    • "Will the tour guide or other staff be able to provide assistance if needed?" (Be mindful that tour guides are typically not personal caregivers, but they can often offer general assistance.)
  • Group Size: A smaller group size might allow for more flexibility and individual attention.

Don't be afraid to ask for specifics and detailed information. A reputable tour operator will be happy to answer your questions and provide clarity. If they are hesitant or unable to provide clear answers regarding accessibility, it might be best to consider other options.

Navigating Transportation Options

Accessible transportation is a cornerstone of an enjoyable shore excursion. Here are common scenarios and considerations:

  • Cruise Line Organized Excursions: Many cruise lines offer a selection of accessible shore excursions. These often utilize accessible buses with ramps or lifts. When booking through the cruise line, clearly indicate your accessibility needs.
  • Independent Tour Operators: Working with local, independent tour operators can sometimes offer more tailored and flexible accessible options. Websites and online forums dedicated to accessible travel can be valuable resources for finding these operators.
  • Private Accessible Transfers: Consider arranging private accessible transportation if group tours don't meet your needs. This allows for a customized itinerary and pace. Your cruise line or a local accessible travel agency can often assist with arranging this.
  • Taxis and Public Transportation: In some ports, accessible taxis or public transportation options may be available. Research these options in advance, but be aware that reliability and accessibility standards can vary greatly.

Valuable Resources for Finding Accessible Tours

Several resources can aid your search for accessible shore excursions:

  • Cruise Line Accessibility Departments: Contact the cruise line's accessibility or special needs department directly. They can provide information on accessible excursions offered on your specific itinerary.
  • Accessible Travel Websites and Forums: Websites and online communities dedicated to accessible travel often feature reviews and recommendations for accessible tours and operators in various destinations. Search for terms like "accessible shore excursions [port name]" or "wheelchair accessible tours [port name]."
  • Local Tourism Boards and Organizations: Tourism boards in your ports of call may have information on accessible attractions and tour providers.
  • Travel Agents Specializing in Accessible Travel: These agents have expertise in planning accessible itineraries and can assist you in finding suitable shore excursions.

Empowering Your Port Days

With thorough research and direct communication, you can confidently plan accessible shore excursions that allow you to fully experience the wonders of each port of call. Don't let mobility challenges limit your sense of adventure! By asking the right questions, exploring your transportation options, and utilizing available resources, you can unlock a world of accessible adventures and create unforgettable memories on your cruise.

Smooth Sailing for Everyone: Navigating Cruise Ship Accessibility Features

Dreaming of ocean breezes and exotic destinations? For travelers with mobility challenges or other disabilities, the idea of a cruise can be incredibly appealing – a floating resort where many needs are catered to in one place. Modern cruise ships have made significant strides in accessibility, offering a range of features designed to ensure everyone can enjoy a comfortable and memorable voyage.

However, understanding the landscape of accessibility features can feel like navigating uncharted waters. That's why we've put together this comprehensive overview of what you can typically expect when it comes to accessibility on today's cruise ships.

Accessible Cabin Design: Your Home Away From Home

Your cabin is your sanctuary on any cruise, and for those with accessibility needs, thoughtful design is paramount. Here's what to look for in an accessible cabin:

  • Wider Doorways: Standard cabin doorways can be narrow, making maneuverability difficult for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Accessible cabins feature wider doorways (typically at least 32 inches clear width) to allow for easy passage.
  • Bathroom Layouts: Bathrooms in accessible cabins are designed with functionality and ease of use in mind. Key features often include:
    • Roll-in Showers: Eliminating the threshold of a traditional shower stall makes showering safer and more convenient for wheelchair users. Many also include fold-down seats and handheld showerheads.
    • Grab Bars: Strategically placed grab bars near the toilet and in the shower provide essential support and stability.
    • Lowered Sink and Vanity: A lowered sink and vanity area with knee clearance allow for comfortable use while seated.
    • Turning Radius: The overall layout of the bathroom will offer more space for maneuvering a wheelchair.
  • Ramp Access (in some suites or specific areas): While most cabin access is level, some larger suites or unique cabin configurations might include short ramps. Always confirm cabin specifics when booking.
  • Lowered Closet Rods and Shelves: These small but significant details make it easier to access your belongings.
  • Accessible Balconies: If you opt for a balcony cabin, ensure the balcony door is accessible and the balcony itself offers sufficient space to move around.

Pro Tip: When booking, be specific about your needs and ask for detailed information and even photos of the accessible cabin you are considering.

Smooth Transitions: Elevator Access Throughout the Ship

Getting around the ship should be a breeze for everyone. Modern cruise ships are generally equipped with elevators that provide access to all public decks. Key considerations include:

  • Elevator Size: Ensure the elevators are large enough to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
  • Braille and Audible Announcements: These features are crucial for visually impaired passengers.
  • Placement and Availability: Check the ship's deck plan to understand the location of elevators and ensure they serve all the areas you plan to visit.

Dining for All: Accessible Options in Restaurants and Lounges

Enjoying meals and socializing are integral parts of the cruise experience. Cruise lines are increasingly catering to diverse needs in their dining venues:

  • Ramp or Level Access: Restaurants and lounges should have ramp or level access to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids.
  • Spacious Seating Arrangements: Adequate space between tables allows for easy navigation. Requesting a specific table in advance might be helpful.
  • Dietary Accommodations: While not strictly an accessibility feature, the ability to cater to various dietary needs (including allergies and other medical requirements) is essential for many travelers. Be sure to inform the cruise line of any dietary restrictions in advance.

Mobility Aids at Your Service: Rentals and Considerations

Traveling with your own mobility aids is often possible, but for those who prefer not to or need additional assistance, many cruise lines offer rental services:

  • Wheelchairs and Scooters: These are commonly available for rent, either for the entire cruise or on a daily basis. Reserve these well in advance as availability can be limited.
  • Other Equipment: Depending on the cruise line, you might also be able to rent items like walkers, shower chairs, and commodes.
  • Storage: Consider the storage space in your cabin for any mobility aids you bring or rent. Accessible cabins typically offer more space.

Important Note: While cruise lines strive to provide accessible environments, it's crucial to remember that ships are still vessels with certain limitations. Weather conditions and the ship's movement can sometimes impact accessibility. Open communication with the cruise line before and during your voyage is key to addressing any concerns and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Planning an accessible cruise requires careful consideration and research. By understanding the accessibility features available on modern cruise ships, you can choose the perfect vessel and itinerary to meet your specific needs and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

Aces of Taste: Hitting the Jackpot on a Vegas Food Tour

Alright, buckle up, buttercup, because we're about to ditch the dazzling lights for delectable bites on a Vegas adventure that'll tantalize your taste buds! Forget what you think you know about Sin City – beyond the glitz and the games, a whole new world of flavor is bubbling up, and trust us, you're gonna want a taste.

Now, your trusty Come Monday crew, always on the hunt for a good story (and even better food!), recently found ourselves smack-dab in the middle of this delicious revolution. We were in town for VAX Connection, soaking up all the travel goodness, when the folks at The Tour Guy, in cahoots with the awesome Best Bet Vegas Tours, invited us on a culinary escapade. Consider it the extra scoop of ice cream on an already sweet trip! Dying to know what mouthwatering mischief we got into? Well, grab a napkin, friend, because here's the lowdown on the "Best Bites on the Strip" tour.

Pit Stop #1: Greenberg & Sons Delicatessen at New York-New York

Picture this: you're strolling through the neon jungle of Vegas, and suddenly, BAM! You're transported to a cozy, dimly lit New York deli. That's the magic of Greenberg & Sons at New York-New York. Seriously, the facade is so spot-on, you'll swear you just hopped a train uptown. Our mission at this first stop? Tackle their legendary mile-high corned beef sandwich. Spoiler alert: it lived up to the hype and then some. Juicy corned beef and pastrami piled high, tangy slaw, a slather of thousand island dressing, all nestled between slices of fresh-baked rye. Pure sandwich perfection, punctuated by a crisp pickle spear. As we savored each bite, our guide spun tales of Vegas's past, flashing photos of mobsters and the once barren landscape that blossomed into the Strip we know today. Talk about a flavorful history lesson!

Intermezzo #2: Eataly at Park MGM

With our Greenberg's goodness still dancing on our tongues (oh, that corned beef!), we moseyed on over to Park MGM and the sprawling foodie paradise that is Eataly. Walking into this 40,000-square-foot Italian marketplace is like stepping onto a charming street in Italy. You can grab a quick bite, settle in for a proper meal, or even snag some authentic ingredients to whip up your own culinary creations back home. We were instantly charmed by the bright, airy space, filled with natural light and lush greenery – a welcome oasis in the Vegas buzz. Our "bite" here? A slice of heaven: pizza topped with house-made mozzarella and the finest Italian imports, served on the cutest little ceramic plate. The silence as we devoured that cheesy goodness spoke volumes. Our guide also pointed out the subtle nature-inspired touches throughout Park MGM, from the "park" theme to the delicate details in the decor. Who knew Vegas could be so…organic?

Scene Change #3: Bāng Bar by Momofuku at The Cosmopolitan

Next up, we plunged into the youthful energy of The Cosmopolitan, one of the Strip's newer and undeniably hipper haunts. Our guide clued us in that this spot draws a younger crowd, so it made perfect sense that our third stop was tucked away inside Block 16, a trendy food hall brimming with everything from morning donuts to late-night tacos. Our guide, a true pro, had already secured us a table and returned with a spread from Bāng Bar by Momofuku. This place is all about spit-roasted meats with a delicious Asian twist. I went for the chicken teriyaki fold-up, a tangy and satisfying wrap packed with refreshing slaw and nestled in their signature Bāng flatbread. Beef, pork, and even eggplant options were also on offer. Honestly? It was so good, I found myself back there the very next day for another fix! And, keeping with the theme, we learned that Block 16's name pays homage to a once-infamous Vegas street. History is served!

Sweet Finale #4: Bellagio Patisserie at The Bellagio

No food adventure is complete without a sweet ending, right? So, before we bid adieu to Block 16, our guide posed the all-important question: "Gelato flavor?" After a quick round of orders, we set off for the iconic Bellagio. What struck me was how seamlessly each stop flowed into the next, and the Bellagio was no exception. We wandered through a hallway adorned with quirky art, past tempting dining spots like The Wicked Spoon and The Cosmopolitan's hidden Ski Lodge, finally descending into the elegant Bellagio Patisserie. Home to the world's largest chocolate fountain (a sight to behold!) and some seriously tempting French pastries, we eagerly awaited our gelato. And let me tell you, they were not shy with the scoops! My pistachio gelato was creamy, dreamy, and just the right amount of sweet. A perfect punctuation mark to our culinary journey.

Bonus Round: Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

As if our taste buds weren't already singing, our guide treated us to a final flourish: a stroll through the breathtaking Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. This free attraction is a feast for the eyes, with its ever-changing floral displays. During our visit, it was a vibrant celebration of spring, and we couldn't help but "ooh" and "ahh" at the towering, fragrant exhibits.

So there you have it, folks! Vegas isn't just about the bright lights and the thrill of the gamble; it's a surprisingly delicious destination waiting to be explored, one bite at a time. This food tour was an absolute blast, a fantastic way to discover a different side of the city and indulge in some truly incredible eats.

Captain Cara's Booty-licious Mojito: A Swashbuckling Sip of Paradise!

Ahoy there, landlubbers and fellow adventurers! Captain Cara Bean here, your trusty (and dare I say, fabulous) Food and Drink Report gal for the Come Monday Travel Blog. Today, I’m not chartin’ courses or dodgin’ krakens (though some days, the office feels mighty close!), but instead, I’m sharin’ a treasure more valuable than any gold doubloon: me secret recipe for the perfect mojito!

Now, a good pirate always has a few tricks up their sleeve, and this, me hearties, is one of me finest. But before I spill the beans (or should I say, the mint?), let me spin ye a yarn about how this glorious concoction came to be a staple on me ship, The Salty Siren.

Picture this: the year is 1718. The Caribbean sun is beatin’ down like a blacksmith’s hammer, and me crew and I have just… acquired… a rather impressive haul of Spanish limes and a whole lotta sugarcane from a particularly grumpy governor’s plantation. We were parched, see? Thirstier than a desert nomad after a week in the dunes.

Barnacle Bart, me grizzled first mate (a fella who could smell rum from a league away), he starts rummagin’ through our… supplies… and pulls out a bottle of the finest white rum we’d “borrowed” from a passing merchant vessel. Now, Bart wasn’t known for his delicate palate. His usual drink of choice involved somethin’ murky and potent, often brewed in a rusty kettle.

But this time, the tropical air must’ve addled his brain. He grabbed some of those limes, muddled ‘em with a bit of that sweet sugarcane, tore some fragrant mint leaves we’d found growin’ wild on a nearby isle, and splashed in the rum. He offered me a taste, and by the kraken’s beard, it was like a choir of mermaids singin’ on me tongue! The perfect balance of sweet, tart, and refreshin’, with a kick that could put a spring in a peg leg.

From that day forward, the “Bart’s Brew,” as we initially called it (much to Bart’s grumblin’), became our go-to celebratory drink. Over time, with a few of me own… enhancements… it evolved into the magnificent mojito ye know and love today. It’s the taste of adventure, the spirit of the sea in a glass!

So, are ye ready to whip up your own batch of this pirate’s pleasure? Here’s the recipe, straight from Captain Cara’s galley:

Captain Cara’s Booty-licious Mojito

What ye’ll need, me hearties:

  • 2 sprigs of fresh mint
  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar (or about ¾ ounce of simple syrup, if ye be fancy)
  • The juice of 1 fresh lime (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 ounces of good quality white rum
  • Soda water
  • Ice
  • Lime wedges and extra mint sprigs, for garnish

Here’s how to make it like a seasoned swashbuckler:

  1. Muddle with Merriment: In a sturdy glass (a proper tankard works wonders!), gently muddle the mint leaves with the sugar (or simple syrup). Don’t be too rough, ye don’t want to bruise the poor leaves – just release their fragrant oils.
  2. Lime Time, Matey!: Squeeze in the fresh lime juice. Give it a little stir to combine the citrus with the sweet mint.
  3. Rum Ahoy!: Pour in the white rum. This is where the magic truly happens!
  4. Ice, Ice, Baby!: Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. The colder, the better for a true taste of the tropics.
  5. Top it Off with Fizz: Top the glass with soda water, leavin’ a little room at the top.
  6. Stir with Swagger: Give it a gentle stir to combine all the glorious flavors.
  7. Garnish Like a Grand Admiral: Garnish with a fresh lime wedge and a vibrant sprig of mint. It’s all about presentation, even for us pirates!

Captain Cara’s Extra Tips for a Truly Treasure-Worthy Mojito:

  • Fresh is Best: Don’t even think about using bottled lime juice or dried mint. Fresh ingredients are the key to a truly exceptional mojito.
  • Sugar Savvy: If ye prefer a sweeter drink, feel free to add a little more sugar or simple syrup to your likin’.
  • Rum Rumblings: While white rum is traditional, feel free to experiment with a light aged rum for a slightly different flavor profile. Just don’t tell Barnacle Bart I said that!
  • Muddle Mindfully: Remember, gentle muddling is the way to go. Over-muddling can release bitter flavors from the mint.
  • Get Creative! Feel free to add a few muddled berries or a splash of other fruit juices for a fun twist.

So there ye have it, me buckos! Captain Cara’s foolproof recipe for a mojito that’ll transport ye straight to a sun-drenched beach, even if ye’re stuck on dry land. Now go forth, mix yourselves a batch, and let the good times roll! Cheers to adventure, friendship, and the perfect sip of paradise!

Until next time, may your sails be full and your spirits even fuller!

Yours in adventure and good taste,

Captain Cara Bean

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot! My Red Beans & Rice Recipe with a Bayou Buzz

Alright, buckle up buttercups, because this ain't just any ol' pot of beans. This here is my Red Beans & Rice recipe, passed down with a wink and a whisper (and maybe a little spilled bourbon) from a legendary dame I met down in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras. Let's call her Lulu La Roux – a woman whose spice cabinet rivaled the treasures of a pirate queen and whose stories could charm the stripes off a tiger.

Lulu wasn't your typical grandma in the kitchen. Oh no, darling. She was a whirlwind of vibrant scarves, clanking bangles, and a laugh that could cut through the brassiest jazz band. She ran a tiny, blink-and-you'll-miss-it eatery tucked away on a cobblestone street, and her Red Beans & Rice? Honey, it was legendary. Pilgrims practically lined up on Mondays for a taste.

Now, Lulu wasn't one for precise measurements. Her cooking was all about feeling the spirit of the ingredients, a little pinch of this, a generous glug of that. But one rainy afternoon, after a particularly potent hurricane cocktail (or two… or three), I managed to coax the general idea out of her, scribbling furiously on a cocktail napkin as she regaled me with tales of mischievous sprites and secret ingredient love potions.

The secret, she told me with a saucy wink, wasn't just in the trinity or the smoky ham. It was in the attitude. You gotta stir it with love, let it simmer with patience, and add just enough heat to make things interesting, ya dig? Not so much that you're breathing fire, but enough to make you sit up and take notice. Just like life, right? A little spice keeps things exciting.

So, darlings, when you make this recipe, remember Lulu. Remember the laughter, the stories, the vibrant soul of New Orleans. Pour yourself a drink, put on some blues, and let the magic happen. This isn't just dinner; it's a little taste of the Big Easy, served with a side of sass and a whole lotta heart. Now, let's get cooking!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound dried red beans
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 ham hock or smoked sausage
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the red beans and pick through them to remove any debris.
  2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, celery, and green bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic, oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper, chipotle pepper, and bay leaf. Cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Add the red beans, ham hock or smoked sausage, and 8 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the beans are tender.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Serve over cooked rice.

Tips:

  • If you don't have a ham hock or smoked sausage, you can use a piece of smoked ham or bacon.
  • You can add other vegetables to this recipe, such as carrots, tomatoes, or okra.
  • This recipe can be made ahead of time and reheated.

Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. It is a great way to use up leftover ham or smoked sausage. It is also a great dish to make for a crowd.

Come Monday, Let Your Worries Sail Away:

Why a Travel Agent is Your Stress-Free First Mate

Remember that "amazing" deal you found online for a trip to Costa Rica? The one with the suspiciously cheap flights and the "charming" eco-lodge nestled deep in the rainforest? Well, Sarah and Tom do. What started as a quest for adventure and budget-friendliness quickly spiraled into a comedy of errors. Their connecting flight was delayed by 12 hours, leaving them stranded in a noisy airport overnight. The "charming" eco-lodge turned out to be a dilapidated shack with questionable plumbing and an unwelcome family of geckos. And the rental car they booked? Let's just say it had seen better decades. By the time they limped back home, exhausted and significantly over budget after scrambling to fix the myriad of issues, their "dream vacation" felt more like a survival challenge.

Sound familiar, friend? In today's digital age, the allure of planning your own travel is strong. The internet puts a world of options at your fingertips, promising control and cost savings. Come Monday, Make Business Travel Easy: Finding Your Ideal Accommodation

Business travel can be demanding. Between meetings, presentations, and networking, the last thing you need is the added stress of subpar accommodation. Your hotel or chosen stay becomes your temporary office and sanctuary, so making the right choice is crucial for productivity and well-being. At Come Monday Travel, we understand the unique needs of business travelers, and we're here to guide you in finding the perfect home away from home.

So, how do you navigate the sea of options and pinpoint the best business-friendly accommodation? Here are some key factors to consider:

Location, Location, Location: In the world of business, time is money. Opting for accommodation strategically located near your meeting venues, conference centers, or easily accessible via public transportation can save you valuable hours and reduce travel fatigue. Consider factors like traffic during peak hours and the convenience of reaching essential amenities like restaurants or pharmacies.

Essential Business Amenities: Reliable Wi-Fi is non-negotiable for staying connected and productive. Look for hotels that offer complimentary, high-speed internet access throughout the property. A well-equipped business center with printing, scanning, and computer access can also be a lifesaver for those last-minute tasks. Don't forget to check for in-room workspaces with comfortable seating and adequate lighting.

Fueling Your Success: Breakfast Options: Starting your day with a nutritious and convenient breakfast can make a significant difference. Many business hotels offer complimentary breakfast buffets with a variety of options. Check if early breakfast hours are available to accommodate tight schedules. Alternatively, consider accommodations near cafes or restaurants for a quick and easy start to your day.

The Perks of Loyalty: Hotel Loyalty Programs: Frequent business travel can translate to valuable rewards through hotel loyalty programs. Accumulate points for free nights, upgrades, and other perks. Consider sticking with hotel chains that have a strong presence in your common business travel destinations.

Beyond the Hotel: Exploring Alternative Options: While hotels are a traditional choice, serviced apartments offer a compelling alternative, especially for longer stays. These furnished apartments often include kitchen facilities, laundry services, and more living space, providing a greater sense of independence and comfort. They can also be a cost-effective option for extended trips.

Let Come Monday Travel Be Your Guide: Navigating these choices can be time-consuming. That's where Come Monday Travel steps in. We understand the nuances of business travel and can help you identify accommodations that perfectly align with your specific needs and preferences. We take the hassle out of the process, ensuring you have a comfortable, convenient, and productive stay.

Come Monday, Still Productive: Essential Tech and Tools for the Business Traveler

The open road (or the airplane aisle!) can be both exhilarating and challenging, especially when work calls. While the change of scenery might spark creativity, staying on top of deadlines and maintaining productivity while traveling for business requires a strategic approach – and the right tech by your side. Fear not, road warriors! Come Monday Travel has curated a list of essential tech gadgets and apps to keep you efficient and effective, no matter your location.

Power Up Your Productivity: Portable Chargers

Let's face it: a dead battery is the ultimate productivity killer. Investing in a reliable portable charger is non-negotiable. Look for one with multiple ports to charge your phone, laptop, and tablet simultaneously. High capacity is key for longer trips or when you know access to outlets will be limited. How it enhances productivity: Ensures you stay connected and can work uninterrupted, preventing the frustration and downtime of a dead device.Silence the Chaos: Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whether you're on a bustling train, in a noisy airport lounge, or even in a hotel room with thin walls, noise-canceling headphones are a game-changer. They create a focused environment by minimizing distractions, allowing you to concentrate on calls, emails, or that crucial presentation. How it enhances productivity: Improves focus and concentration, leading to better quality work and reduced stress.

Your Office on the Go: Mobile Hotspot

While hotel Wi-Fi can be convenient, it's not always reliable or secure. A mobile hotspot provides a personal and secure internet connection wherever you have cellular service. This is especially crucial for accessing sensitive company data or participating in important video conferences. How it enhances productivity: Guarantees a stable and secure internet connection, enabling seamless online work and communication.

Capture Every Brilliant Idea: Note-Taking Apps

Inspiration can strike anywhere. Having a reliable note-taking app on your phone, tablet, or laptop allows you to capture thoughts, meeting minutes, and to-do lists instantly. Apps like Evernote, OneNote, and Notion offer features like cloud syncing, organization tools, and the ability to integrate various media. How it enhances productivity: Keeps your ideas organized and accessible, ensuring you don't lose valuable insights and can easily refer back to important information.

Collaborate Seamlessly: Collaboration Tools

Staying connected with your team is paramount when you're on the road. Collaboration tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Workspace offer platforms for instant messaging, file sharing, video conferencing, and project management. These tools bridge the geographical gap and keep everyone on the same page. How it enhances productivity: Facilitates efficient communication, teamwork, and project coordination, regardless of location.

Bonus Tip: Cloud Storage

Don't forget the power of the cloud! Services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive ensure your important files are backed up and accessible from any device. This eliminates the risk of losing data if your device is lost or damaged while traveling.

Staying productive on the road doesn't have to be a struggle. By investing in these essential tech gadgets and utilizing the right apps, you can transform any location into a functional and efficient workspace. So, pack smart, stay connected, and make the most of your business travels!

Breeze Through Security: Tips from a Seasoned Traveler

Ah, airport security. For many, just the words conjure images of long lines, frantic unpacking, and the dreaded shoe removal. But what if we told you that navigating this often-stressful process can actually be… dare we say… smooth? As seasoned travelers here at Come Monday Travel, we've learned a few tricks of the trade to glide through security checkpoints with the grace of a seasoned pro. Ready to ditch the pre-flight jitters and reclaim your time? Let's dive in!

Pack Smart, Travel Light (and Right):

Your carry-on can be your best friend or your biggest foe at security. Here’s how to make it the former:

  • Liquids Logic: Remember the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4-ounce (100 milliliters) or less per container; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger. Decant your favorite toiletries into travel-sized containers before you arrive at the airport. Keep this bag easily accessible for quick removal.
  • Electronics Easy Access: Laptops, tablets, and other large electronics often need to be removed from your bag. Pack them in a way that allows for swift retrieval and repacking. Consider a dedicated compartment in your carry-on.
  • Minimize the Metal: Think ahead about jewelry, belts with large metal buckles, and even underwire bras (though this is less of a concern with newer scanners). If possible, leave unnecessary metal items at home or pack them in your checked luggage.
  • Snack Strategically: While you can bring most solid food items through security, avoid anything messy or that could be considered a liquid or gel. Think granola bars, crackers, and dried fruit.

Dress for Success (at Security):

Your outfit can also impact your speed through the checkpoint:

  • Easy Layers: Opt for clothing that’s easy to remove and put back on. Bulky sweaters or complicated layers can slow you down.
  • Slip-On Shoes: Save yourself the hassle of untying laces. Wearing slip-on shoes makes the removal and re-donning process much quicker.
  • Empty Your Pockets: Before you even approach the scanners, empty all your pockets – keys, coins, phone, wallet. Place these items in a jacket pocket or your carry-on bag to avoid setting off the alarms and needing a secondary screening.

The Fast Lane: Expedited Security Programs:

If you're a frequent flyer, investing in expedited security programs can be a game-changer:

  • TSA PreCheck: This program allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to experience a faster security screening process at participating U.S. airports. You typically don't need to remove your shoes, laptops, liquids, and light outerwear.
  • Global Entry: While primarily for expedited U.S. customs clearance upon arrival, Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck benefits. This is a fantastic option for international travelers.

Be Prepared, Be Polite:

A little preparation and a friendly attitude go a long way:

  • Have Your Documents Ready: Keep your boarding pass and government-issued photo ID readily accessible. Have them in hand as you approach the security checkpoint.
  • Listen and Follow Instructions: Security officers are there to ensure everyone's safety. Pay attention to their instructions and follow them promptly.
  • Be Patient and Understanding: Lines can sometimes be long, and unexpected issues can arise. A little patience and understanding will make the experience less stressful for everyone.

Come Monday, Go Further: Packing Like a Pro with a Business Trip Capsule Wardrobe

That Monday morning meeting doesn't have to start with wrestling a suitcase the size of a small car. Frequent business travelers know the drill: you want to look professional and prepared, but lugging around your entire closet simply isn't practical. The secret? Mastering the art of the capsule wardrobe.

Think of a capsule wardrobe as a curated collection of essential clothing items that are versatile enough to be mixed and matched, creating a multitude of outfits without taking up precious luggage space. It's about smart choices, not sacrifices. Ready to lighten your load and elevate your business travel style? Let's dive in!

The Core Principles of a Business Trip Capsule:

  • Neutral Territory: Stick to a base of neutral colors like black, navy, gray, white, and beige. These form the foundation of your wardrobe and ensure everything works well together.
  • Quality over Quantity: Invest in well-fitting, high-quality pieces that will travel well and last. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics are your new best friend.
  • Versatility is Key: Each item should ideally be able to be styled in at least two or three different ways. A blazer can go from a meeting to dinner, and a simple blouse can be dressed up or down.
  • Consider Your Itinerary: While the goal is versatility, take a moment to think about the specific activities on your trip. Will you need workout clothes? A dressier outfit for a client dinner? Adjust your capsule accordingly.

Your Essential Business Trip Capsule Wardrobe:

Here's a suggested starting point for a typical 2-3 day business trip. Adjust based on the length of your trip and specific needs:

  • Bottoms (2-3):
    • One pair of well-fitting trousers (black, navy, or gray)
    • One skirt or another pair of trousers (consider a different neutral color or a subtle pattern)
    • Optional: One pair of dark-wash, tailored jeans for more casual business settings or downtime.
  • Tops (3-4):
    • Two versatile blouses (one in a neutral color, one in a subtle color or pattern)
    • One well-fitting knit top or sweater
    • Optional: A simple, neutral-colored t-shirt that can be layered or worn on its own.
  • Outerwear (1):
    • A blazer (choose a neutral color that complements your bottoms)
    • Optional: A lightweight trench coat or jacket depending on the weather.
  • Dress (1):
    • A versatile sheath or A-line dress in a neutral color that can be dressed up or down with accessories.
  • Shoes (2):
    • One pair of comfortable yet professional heels or flats
    • One pair of versatile dress shoes or loafers
  • Accessories:
    • A scarf (adds color and warmth, can also dress up an outfit)
    • A statement necklace or earrings
    • A belt
    • A professional handbag or tote
  • Undergarments and Socks: Pack appropriately for the duration of your trip.
  • Pajamas: Comfort is key, even on the road.

Packing Like a Pro: Space-Saving Secrets:

Now that you've curated your capsule, it's time to pack it efficiently:

  • The Rolling Method: Instead of folding, tightly roll your clothes. This method saves space and helps minimize wrinkles.
  • Packing Cubes: These fabric organizers are game-changers. They help compress your clothes, keep items separated, and make it easier to find what you need without unpacking everything.
  • Utilize Empty Space: Stuff socks, underwear, and small accessories inside shoes to maximize every inch of your suitcase.
  • Heaviest Items at the Bottom: Place heavier items like shoes and toiletries near the wheels of your suitcase for better balance.
  • Plan Your Outfits: Before you even start packing, mentally (or physically) put together a few different outfits using your capsule pieces. This ensures you have everything you need and avoids overpacking unnecessary items.

Come Monday, You'll Be Ready:

By embracing the capsule wardrobe approach, you can transform your business trip packing from a stressful chore into a streamlined process. You'll save time, energy, and valuable luggage space, allowing you to focus on what truly matters – a successful and productive trip. So next time you're packing for business, remember: less is often more. Happy travels!

Smooth Sailing Expenses: Streamlining Your Business Travel Reports

Ah, the thrill of a business trip! New cities, important meetings, and the chance to connect with colleagues or clients. But then comes the inevitable: the expense report. For many, this task feels like navigating a bureaucratic maze. But fear not, fellow travelers! At Come Monday Travel, we believe that even expense reports can be handled with efficiency and ease. Let's dive into some best practices to streamline your business travel expense process and get you back to focusing on what truly matters.

Understanding Your Company's Compass: Know the Expense Policy

Before you even pack your bags, your first and most crucial step is to thoroughly understand your company's expense policy. This document is your compass in the world of business spending. Pay close attention to:

  • What's reimbursable: Are those client dinners covered? What about laundry expenses on longer trips? Knowing what's acceptable will save you time and potential headaches later.
  • Spending limits: Are there daily allowances for meals or maximum amounts for accommodation? Staying within these limits ensures smooth reimbursement.
  • Required documentation: What kind of receipts are needed? Are digital copies acceptable? Understanding these requirements upfront will prevent last-minute scrambling.
  • Submission deadlines: When are expense reports due? Prompt submission is key to getting reimbursed in a timely manner.

Digital Docking: Embrace Expense Tracking Apps

Say goodbye to shoeboxes overflowing with crumpled receipts! Technology offers a plethora of fantastic apps designed to simplify expense tracking. These apps allow you to:

  • Capture receipts on the go: Simply snap a photo of your receipt with your smartphone, and the app will often automatically extract key information like date, amount, and vendor.
  • Categorize expenses easily: Most apps allow you to categorize expenses (e.g., meals, transportation, accommodation), making organization a breeze.
  • Generate reports: Once your trip is complete, these apps can often generate a ready-to-submit expense report, saving you significant time.

Here are a few popular and highly-rated expense tracking apps to consider:

  • Expensify: Known for its SmartScan feature that automatically transcribes receipt details and its robust integration capabilities with accounting software.
  • Concur Expense: A comprehensive solution often used by larger organizations, offering features like automated policy enforcement and approval workflows.
  • Zoho Expense: A user-friendly option that allows for receipt scanning, expense categorization, and customizable reporting.
  • Google Drive/Notes (with OCR apps): While not dedicated expense apps, cloud storage services like Google Drive, coupled with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) apps (like Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens), can help you digitize and organize receipts. Simply scan your receipts and store them in a dedicated folder.

Navigating the Digital Seas: Organizing Receipts Effectively

Whether you use a dedicated app or a more manual digital system, organization is paramount. Here are some tips:

  • Process receipts regularly: Don't wait until the end of your trip. Take a few minutes each day to photograph and categorize your receipts. This prevents a daunting backlog.
  • Label clearly: If using a manual system, name your digital receipt files descriptively (e.g., "Hotel_NYC_04162025," "ClientLunch_ItalianRestaurant_04172025").
  • Utilize folders: Create folders for each business trip or even for different expense categories within a trip.
  • Back it up: Ensure your digital receipts are backed up to a cloud service to prevent data loss.

Steering Clear of Stormy Seas: Avoiding Common Expense Report Errors

Mistakes in expense reports can lead to delays in reimbursement and unnecessary back-and-forth. Here are some common pitfalls to avoid:

  • Missing receipts: Always obtain a receipt for every business expense, no matter how small. If a receipt is lost, try to get a duplicate or follow your company's policy for missing documentation.
  • Illegible receipts: Ensure your scanned or photographed receipts are clear and easy to read.
  • Incorrect categorization: Double-check that each expense is categorized correctly according to your company's policy.
  • Math errors: Review your report for any calculation mistakes. Many expense apps will handle this automatically.
  • Submitting personal expenses: Keep your business and personal expenses separate. Only include legitimate business-related costs in your report.
  • Late submissions: Adhere to the submission deadlines to ensure timely reimbursement.

The Importance of a Timely Tide: Submit Promptly

Submitting your expense reports promptly benefits everyone. It ensures you get reimbursed quickly, helps your company maintain accurate financial records, and reduces the administrative burden on the accounting team. Aim to submit your report within a few days of completing your trip.

Final Thoughts: Smooth Sailing Ahead

Managing business travel expenses doesn't have to be a stressful ordeal. By understanding your company's policies, leveraging the power of technology, staying organized, and avoiding common errors, you can streamline the process and reclaim valuable time. With these best practices in your toolkit, you can navigate the world of expense reports with confidence and focus on the more exciting aspects of your business travels.
